Grangetown Liberal Democrat Councillor, Francesca Montemaggi has slammed the insulting comments by Mr Collins

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Grangetown, Francesca Montemaggi, has condemned the 'brain-dead' slur against Welsh made by a Grangetown Labour candidate.

David Collins, who is Labour Party candidate for Grangetown and school governor in Grangetown, attacked the Welsh language saying that it was "brain-dead".

Grangetown Lib Dem Councillor, Francesca Montemaggi, said: "By calling the Welsh language "brain-dead", David Collins, has been deeply offensive. I am a school governor at Grangetown Primary with him but, unlike him, I believe Welsh should be promoted.

"I have campaigned for more Welsh-medium education in Grangetown and I am glad that the Cardiff Liberal Democrat administration has introduced Welsh starter classes here.

"The Welsh language is very much alive in Cardiff as well as across Wales. This is because people want to learn Welsh and keep it alive. Unlike Labour, we recognise the importance of Welsh and are deeply committed to the language."
